1923-S Monroe Doctrine half dollar PCGS MS63 (Reverse)
Previous Item | Next Item
Description: This half dollar commemorates the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Monroe Doctrine. The Monroe Doctrine dictated US foreign policy for hundreds of years, serving as an effort to halt European expansion into the New World and to establish the New World as the US's sphere of influence. With a mintage of 274,000 coins, the 1923-S Monroe Doctrine is one of the more common commemorative half dollars and is plentiful in mint state condition. The obverse features the busts of James Monroe and John Quincy Adams. The reverse depicts the continents of North America and South America. The continents of North America and South America were stylized to look like two goddesses. Peculiarly, The US Mint's motive behind producing these half dollars was to help fund the film industry in Hollywood.
